Starting in the peninsula of Akrotiri there are various options for you to explore, conveniently located next to your villa. Whether you favour a close escape or a day trip to the southern coast, here are some of the best options for you to choose from.
BEACHES IN AKROTIRI PENINSULA
(8km) Once just a quiet settlement, the beach of Kalathas, with its soft sand and shallow waters, has become a favourite destination for locals and tourists alike. The beach is mostly organized with umbrellas, sunbeds and a lifeguard station but the western end offers more privacy and seclusion for those that prefer to avoid the crowds. You can also swim to the tiny island located right across.
(10 km) The two closest options on the southwestern coast are Marathi and Loutraki. Marathi beach consists of two small bays, with shallow and tranquil waters that are well protected from the winds, and ideal for families with children. The beach of Loutraki provides all amenities visitors will need and is a popular option for locals with lively bars and restaurants and wonderful views of the bay. The small island of Palaiosouda, right opposite the beach, is an excellent diving site for those interested in underwater exploration.
(17 km) The beach of Seitan Limania (or Stefanou Beach) was a quiet and seldom visited spot only known to locals. In recent years, the striking features of the coastline have increased its popularity tenfold. Winding cliffs and marble rocks create a narrow bay with crystalline waters and a white sand sea bottom. It must be said that reaching the beach is part of the appeal since it requires a bit of a walk and there are no amenities.
(19 km) Still famous as the filming location of the classic film Zorba the Greek, where Anthony Quinn taught Basil to dance the “syrtaki", the beach of Stavros is located on the northern coast of the Akrotiri peninsula. It is divided in two, with the eastern part tucked within a narrow bay. Soft sand and stunning waters, as well as various options for lunch, and coffee complete the scene. The western bay is wider, with a plethora of cafes and bars where you can stay to admire the sunset after your swim.
BEACHES IN CHANIA
The western and southern coast of Crete island has more incredible beaches. If you prefer not to drive, a private transfer can be arranged to take you there safely, so you can make the most of sunbed lounging and cocktails by the water.
(92 km) Elafonisi on the southwestern coast has consistently placed among the top beaches in the world and is a protected ecosystem with shallow pools of crystal clear water and a true paradise on earth. In parts, the sand takes on a pinkish hue, due to the presence of corals, which contributes to the novelty and natural beauty of the scenery.
(71 km) Balos is found on the northern coast and can be reached by boat or car. The landscape is characterized by the massive rock boulder that stands in the middle of the lagoon and the soft sand that envelops the surrounding area. The turquoise coloured waters form shallow, warm pools and an exotic, otherworldly scene that cannot be found elsewhere. Boats depart from Kissamos daily during the summertime and include a visit to the small uninhabited island of Gramvousa, once famous as a pirate hideout and the location of hidden treasures.
(71 km) Falassarna is another excellent option, south of Balos, that has been inhabited since the Minoan period. It spans an area of more than 3 km and offers a distinctive vibe that attracts windsurfers, and those seeking to relax undisturbed. The fine white sand extends into the sea-bottom and reflects the azure tones of the water.
(79 km) There is no denying the quaint charm of Loutro, a coastal village, that can only be reached by boat, or for those that prefer something a bit more active, a 2-hour hike from Chora Sfakion. The pristine waters in the harbour, form reflections of the fishing boats, as they stand bobbing softly up and down. While undeniably popular, Loutro has escaped mass tourism; and if you are looking for a romantic setting to dine while watching the sun graze the waters of the Libyan Sea, this is your spot!
